Situationism - A Gallery
Lots of visual media compiled for a show at the Imaginary Museum - almost a Retrospective on Situationism.. if members would really recognize it as a defined movement (which, of course, they won’t).
For reference’s sake, a beautiful explanation of situationism is found here
Moving through the city I am walking a line that has no end and no purpose. I am after a conversation but I don’t know where or when I will find it. The situationists’ term ‘pyschogeography’ which entailed both a remapping and re- experiencing of the city subverted previous notions of navigating an urban environment, replacing a functionalist and commercial traversal with creative, more playful ways of moving through a city. Thederive (drift) described the unplanned journey of literally drifting through the urban landscape without following prescribed signs and habitual pathways like a geographical map, road signs or functional flows. Another similar situationist term which relates to my project is detournement which highlights the unplanned surprises that are found when walking through the city [EXPLAIN]. The pyschogeographical techniques used to navigate space are based on exploration, the production of new experiences and new knowledge, rather than reliance on prefabricated data.
